Cross-Country Analysis of Life Satisfaction
Stehlíková, Zuzana ; Janhuba, Radek (advisor) ; Paulus, Michal (referee)
This thesis examines the relations between subjective well-being and economic, politic and social characteristics of individual countries. We study the link between three components of subjective well-being - life satisfaction, positive affect and negative affect and other country characteristics. First, we use the dataset containing countries from almost all countries of the whole world and then with a more detailed European dataset. For the analysis of life satisfaction, panel data models are used. The results indicate that we are able to explain better variation in life satisfaction by our set of explanatory variables in comparison with positive affect and negative affect. In the former dataset, we discovered that the most important determinants of life satisfaction are GDP per capita, health, freedom to make life choices, political conditions and social support. In the latter, European dataset revealed a strong negative correlation between tertiary education attainment and happiness. The results also indicate that female representation in national parliament is an important predictor of life satisfaction in European countries. This supports the idea that equality between men and women plays an important role in developed societies. Keywords Subjective well-being, Happiness, Life satisfaction,...

Sacrifice as Investment, Investment as Sacrifice
Hrivniaková, Jana ; Sedláček, Tomáš (advisor) ; Janotík, Tomáš (referee)
In this work we will look at a particular example of investment and sacrifice, where investment originates in science and sacrifice in myths, but they both meet. The question is what exactly is what they are describing. Is investment and sacrifice similar or to grasp full understanding of this phenomenon we need both approaches? There can be found characteristics of rites in investment, similar structure and symbolism as well as economic incentives incorporated in the sacrifice. However investment is not perceived as rite and communication with divinity and sacrifice is not pure cost and benefit analysis. This paper tries to answer these questions and clarify the line between the two. It was Walter Benjamin who was first to notice the similarities between religion and economics and we would like to continue with the discussion. This topic is not much discussed further in literature, therefore by this paper we would like to fill the gap and contribute to the topic.

Function of empty space
Krištof, Michal
The city generally consists of built and unbuilt spaces. An unbuilt space could be defined in other words as "void" which is essentially a public or semi-public space. Is it possible to precisely define the meaning of this "external" space of the city? Wh
Mathematization of Economis: Myth or Fact
Vachunová, Petra ; Šťastný, Daniel (advisor) ; Slaný, Martin (referee)
The work deals with the degree of mathematization in economics. Significant degree of mathematization is understood as such a degree, in which mathematic education helps the successful completion of economic subjects. Number of points acquired in the course 55F100 Mathematics for Economists I is used in attempt to determine the degree of mathematization in courses 5EN202-5EN252 Microeconomics and 5EN203-5EN253 Macroeconomics I taught at the University of Economics in Prague. The degree of mathematization failed to be confirmed by the chosen method. The work concludes that the mathematical skills necessary for completion of these courses are not acquired by students at 55F100 course.
